Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson’s Disease
نویسنده
چکیده
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive nervous disorder caused by degeneration of dopamine-producing cells in the substantia nigra. The main symptoms are movement-related, including tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, postural instability, gait disturbance, and so on. Other symptoms include autonomic, sensory, psychiatric and cognitive problem. In general, motor symptoms of PD are initially treated with dopaminergic medications. Recently, deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been performed as another treatment option for medically refractory PD. DBS is an adjustable and reversible treatment using implanted medical devices to deliver electrical stimulation to precisely targeted areas of the brain. DBS modulates neurological function of the target region. The most common target for PD is the subthalamic nucleus (STN). DBS is particularly indicated for patients suffering from motor complications of dopaminergic medication such as fluctuations and dyskinesia. Although there is currently no cure for PD, a combination of medical treatment and DBS provide long-term relief of motor symptoms.

Treatment of Neurological and Psychiatric Disorders with Deep Brain Stimulation Raising Hopes and Future Challenges
The technology of Neural Stimulation in recent years has become the focus of the research and treatment, although it has been around for many years. The potential use of stimulating the brain and nerves ranges from the spinal cord stimulation to the implantations of cochlear and bionic eyes with a large discrepancy between the clinical readiness for these various uses. Electrical high-frequency...
متن کاملThe Effects of Bilateral Subthalamic Nucleus Stimulation on Cognitive and Neuropsychiatric Functions in Parkinson’s Disease: A Case-Control Study
Introduction: Parkinson’s disease is one of the most disabling diseases which by electrode implantation and stimulation of subthalamic nucleus (STN), much progress has been made in the treatment of drug resistant patient. This new method of neurosurgery may have some neuropsychological side effects on the patients. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of this kind of treatment ...
متن کاملThe effect of bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on the acoustic and prosodic features in patients with Parkinson’s disease: A study protocol for the first trial on Iranian patients
Background: The effect of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on the voice features in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is controversial. No study has evaluated the voice features of PD underwent STN-DBS by the acoustic, perceptual, and patient-based assessments comprehensively. Furthermore, there is no study to investigate prosodic features before and after DBS in PD. The curren...
متن کاملRelationship of the P Angle with Stereotactic Arc in Intraoperative Outcome of Patients with Parkinson’s Disease Undergoing Deep Brain Stimulation
Background & Aim: DBS (deep brain stimulation) is a new and successful technique in treatment of symptoms of Parkinsonism especially after drug resistance. Research in this field is mostly designed for evolution of this technique. The present study aimed at evaluating the relationship between the angle formed in midsagittal and STN (sub-thalamic nucleus) axis line and recording l...

Patients with Parkinson’s disease with deep brain stimulation in the subthalamic nucleus postoperatively often display higher impulsivity and therefore may experience difficulties in social interactions. Here, we examined social interactions of patients with Parkinson’s disease with and without deep brain stimulation in the subthalamic nucleus in competitive situations. We hypothesized altered ...
